Area residents and businesses will have an opportunity to shred their confidential documents free of charge at "Shred Day," from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 3, at the St. Louis Galleria.

The public is invited to bring up to three boxes of documents such as check stubs, bank statements, credit card offers and other sensitive materials. The event is sponsored by the Better Business Bureau, Missouri attorney general's office, U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Federal Trade Commission.

Consumers who suspect they have been a victim of identity theft can obtain copies of their credit reports by calling 1-877-322-8228, or by going online at www.annualcreditreport.com. All individuals are entitled by law to get a free copy of their credit report every 12 months from the consumer credit reporting agencies.
